Graduates in mine and engineering surveying are expected to apply core principles, concepts, and methods of surveying to a wide range of tasks and applications within the mining and civil engineering sectors. This includes accurate data collection, spatial representation, and interpretation for both surface and underground projects, supporting critical decisions in construction, infrastructure development, and resource extraction.They must think critically and creatively to develop effective solutions to complex surveying problems. This involves applying logical reasoning and a deep understanding of the tools and technologies used in the field—such as total stations, GPS, laser scanners, drones, and GIS—while recognising their specific advantages and limitations in various contexts. Innovative thinking, grounded in technical knowledge, allows graduates to adapt to challenges and optimise processes.Competency in accessing, evaluating, and synthesising spatial data from a variety of sources is fundamental. Graduates communicate findings effectively using discipline-specific formats, ensuring clarity and accuracy when sharing technical information with clients, colleagues, and broader stakeholders. Strong communication skills are essential to bridge the gap between complex data and practical application.An understanding of both Australian and international best practice standards in surveying is developed through continual self-learning. Graduates are expected to keep pace with evolving industry technologies and practices, using professional development and research skills to maintain and advance their knowledge throughout their careers.Importantly, graduates recognise and respect Indigenous knowledge systems, histories, and cultural contexts. They apply this understanding appropriately when conducting surveying tasks that intersect with Indigenous land and communities.
