COURSE CURRICULUM

The study of law within the Australian legal education framework equips students with a diverse set of competencies essential for effective legal practice. Central to this is the ability to apply knowledge of the Australian legal system, statutory interpretation, and case law to solve legal problems across both core areas and elective specialisations. Students are trained to critically and creatively engage with legal issues, evaluate multiple solutions, and make reasoned decisions grounded in legal principles. A strong emphasis is placed on the capacity to identify and synthesise information from a range of legal sources, including legislation, case law, and scholarly commentary, whether in print or digital format. Effective legal communication is also a key focus, with students expected to clearly and persuasively convey their research findings and legal reasoning to a range of audiences—from legal professionals and clients to the broader community. Proficiency in using electronic legal databases and digital communication tools is essential, reflecting the increasing digitisation of legal practice. Beyond technical knowledge, the curriculum fosters intellectual curiosity and a commitment to justice, encouraging students to continually assess and improve their legal understanding and professional conduct. This includes the capacity to reflect critically on feedback and performance. Students also explore comparative and international legal perspectives, gaining insight into differences between Australian, interstate, and foreign jurisdictions, as well as the foundational concepts of public and private international law.
