COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Biomedical Sciences with a Pharmacology major provides students with a strong understanding of biomedical principles and the scientific foundations required for careers in drug discovery, development, and healthcare research. In the first year, students complete core units covering biomedical science, bioscience practice, chemistry, human structure and function, biostatistics, epidemiology, Indigenous health perspectives, integrated anatomy and physiology, and molecular genetics and cell biology. These studies establish essential knowledge of biological systems, disease processes, and the mechanisms that influence human health. In the second year, students specialise in the Pharmacology major, focusing on how drugs interact with biological systems and how medicines can be developed to prevent or treat diseases. The major explores pharmacological principles, drug actions, therapeutic applications, and the processes involved in drug absorption, distribution, metabolism, and elimination. Students gain practical experience through laboratory activities, computer-based simulations, and scientific investigations of molecular, cellular, and physiological responses to medicines. They also study drug safety, toxicity, dose–response relationships, and the impact of genetic variation on individual drug responses. This major prepares graduates for careers in pharmaceutical research, biotechnology, clinical research, healthcare innovation, and further study in medicine, pharmacy, and biomedical sciences.
