The Bachelor of Journalism & New Media at Collarts is structured over two years, comprising six trimesters of full-time study, with part-time study also available. In the first year, students focus on building foundational skills across Communication Contexts, Principles, Practice, and Creative Foundations. Communication Contexts units include Media and Society, Journalism Law and Ethics, and Creative Industries, providing students with a strong understanding of the social, ethical, and professional frameworks of media. Principles courses, such as Principles of Journalism, Lifestyle, Fashion and Entertainment Journalism, and Social Media Strategy, develop core journalistic knowledge and expertise in digital storytelling. Practice units, including Mobile and Digital Journalism, Professional Writing and Editing, and Audio Journalism, focus on hands-on technical skills for reporting and content creation. Creative Foundations courses and electives further support skill development and professional awareness.In the second year, students progress to advanced study and industry-focused learning. Communication Contexts units such as Publicity and Public Relations, Community Storytelling and Cultural Impact, and Creative Entrepreneurship explore audience engagement, societal influence, and business skills for media professionals. Principles courses, including Music, Performance and Screen Journalism, Feature Writing, and the Journalism Capstone Project, allow students to specialise and demonstrate their journalistic capabilities through major projects. Practice units, Video Journalism and Journalism Capstone Development, provide opportunities to refine multimedia reporting skills and produce professional-level work. Creative Foundations courses, including Documentary Photography & Photojournalism and Multiplatform Storytelling, develop visual storytelling expertise and cross-platform content creation skills. The program culminates with an Industry Placement or Professional Portfolio, giving students real-world experience, professional networking opportunities, and a strong portfolio to support entry into roles such as digital journalist, multimedia reporter, content creator, social media producer, or communications specialist across media, PR, and corporate sectors.
