COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Animal Science program at Charles Sturt University includes a comprehensive curriculum designed to build strong scientific and practical knowledge in animal production, welfare, and related industries. The core subjects (176 credit points) cover key areas such as animal anatomy and physiology, behaviour, welfare and ethics, genetics, biotechnology, growth and development, nutrition, reproduction, health, pharmacology, microbiology, biochemistry, chemistry, biology, statistics, and experimental design. Students also study broader topics like food environment and culture, Indigenous knowledge foundations, and contemporary issues in animal science. In addition to core learning, students complete compulsory subjects (16 credit points) including options such as Extension, Conservation Biology, or Ruminant Production and Welfare, allowing some specialization. The program also includes 64 credit points of restricted electives, where students choose from a wide range of subject areas. These include animal production topics such as parasitology, intensive animal production, and meat and fibre science; agribusiness subjects like agricultural economics, marketing, and finance; agronomy and soil science; equine science subjects covering horse health, nutrition, behaviour, and breeding; conservation biology topics such as wildlife ecology and management; biomedical sciences; food science; and other supporting disciplines. This flexible structure allows students to tailor their degree to their interests while gaining a strong foundation in animal science, preparing them for diverse careers in agriculture, research, conservation, and animal-related industries.
