COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Information Technology (Software Engineering) requires students to successfully complete 160 credit points, providing a comprehensive foundation in both theoretical and practical aspects of software development. The course structure is designed to progressively build expertise in key areas of computing, programming, and systems management, ensuring that graduates are well-prepared for dynamic roles within the software engineering industry. Students undertake 13 core units totalling 140 credit points and one specialist elective unit worth 20 credit points.The core units cover essential areas such as software systems, data science, and database concepts, beginning with introductory subjects like Software Now and Foundations of Data Science. As students progress, they explore advanced topics including IT Service Management, Risk and Reliability Management, and Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence and Algorithms. Units such as Security Assessment in Software Development and Principles of Operating Systems, Networks and Cyber Security equip students with critical skills in information security and systems integration. The curriculum also includes professional and project-based learning components such as Software Engineering Practice, a 20-credit point capstone unit that consolidates technical knowledge through practical application.Students can then choose between a professional placement or a research-focused thesis as their specialist elective, allowing them to tailor the course to their career goals. PRT604 Professional Experience provides real-world industry exposure, while PRT840 IT Thesis allows students to pursue in-depth research in a specialised area of software engineering.Upon completion of the program, graduates will have developed the capability to design, implement, and manage complex software systems, applying advanced methodologies and tools. The program prepares students for careers as software engineers, systems developers, project managers, or IT consultants, with strong analytical, problem-solving, and leadership skills essential for success in the global technology sector.
