COURSE CURRICULUM
The Master of Emergency and Disaster Management requires the completion of 160 credit points, designed to equip students with theoretical knowledge, research skills, and professional expertise in managing emergencies and disasters across local and global contexts. The course structure includes 40 credit points of core coursework, 40 credit points of either a research or capstone project, 10 to 20 credit points in research methodology, 40 credit points of specialist electives, and 20 to 30 credit points of general electives. The four compulsory core units—Emergency and Disaster Management in Context, Interdisciplinary Aspects of Emergency and Disaster Management, Leadership in Emergency and Disaster Management, and Cultural, Social and Psychological Aspects of Emergency and Disaster Management—provide the foundation for understanding the complexities of disaster management theory and practice. Students can choose between two academic pathways: the Capstone Pathway, which combines a capstone project with selected applied units, or the Research Pathway, which focuses on independent research through the Research Proposal and Research Project units. Research methodology units, such as Research Design, Epidemiology, Biostatistics, and Qualitative Research, prepare students for academic inquiry and evidence-based practice. Specialist electives allow learners to tailor their studies across ten key areas, including Humanitarian Practice, Indigenous-Informed Practices, Trauma and Mental Health, Environmental Hazards and Management, and Organisational Leadership and Strategic Management. These electives enable students to build targeted expertise relevant to their professional interests and career goals. Additionally, students may take 20 to 30 credit points of general electives from CDU’s postgraduate offerings or through approved cross-institutional enrolment. Recent course updates introduced defined specialisations, restructured research and capstone options, and refined elective offerings to ensure alignment with current industry needs. Graduates emerge prepared for leadership roles in emergency services, humanitarian aid, policy, and risk management, with the capacity to contribute effectively to disaster preparedness, response, and recovery across diverse environments and sectors.
