COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Architecture program is structured around a series of socially, environmentally, and technically challenging design studios that progressively develop students’ architectural knowledge, creative thinking, and professional skills. The curriculum combines architectural design studios with supporting studies in professional practice, technology, environmental sustainability, and research. Each studio increases in complexity and encourages students to explore innovative design solutions through experimentation, iteration, and critical inquiry. The program culminates in a capstone research-by-design unit where students use the design process as a method of investigation to address contemporary architectural issues. To graduate, students must complete 160 credit points consisting primarily of compulsory core units and one specialist elective. Core units include Architecture 1 – Global, Architecture 2 – Social, Architecture 3 – Praxis, Architecture Research, Theory and Practice, Contemporary Theory in Practice, Professional Practice Theory, Advanced Technology and Innovation in Architecture, Extreme Architecture focusing on climate change and sustainability, and Architecture 4 – Major Project. These subjects develop expertise in sustainable design, professional practice, research methods, and advanced architectural technologies. Students must also complete a 20-credit-point specialist elective, choosing either an Architecture Practice Placement for industry experience or an Architecture Research Project to strengthen research capabilities, allowing flexibility between professional and academic pathways within architecture.
