COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science with an Ecology major is a 240-credit-point program that combines foundational scientific knowledge with specialised ecological and environmental studies. The course begins with core units in earth systems, biodiversity, scientific research design, and the relationship between science, technology, and society, helping students develop a strong understanding of environmental science and analytical thinking. Students in the Ecology major study key areas such as introductory ecology, ecosystems and biodiversity, environmental physiology, fire ecology, aquatic ecosystems, and flora and fauna survey techniques. The program places strong emphasis on practical learning through intensive fieldwork and laboratory experiences in the unique environments of northern Australia, allowing students to gain hands-on experience in ecological research and environmental management. Advanced study options include ecological restoration, conservation, ecosystem dynamics, natural resource management, and Indigenous livelihoods, helping students understand the connections between science, sustainability, and communities. Students also complete elective units that may include wildlife management, biosecurity, aquatic resource management, environmental issues, and applied statistics, allowing flexibility to explore additional interests. Throughout the degree, students develop critical thinking, scientific analysis, problem-solving, and professional skills needed for environmental careers. Overall, the program prepares graduates for employment and further study in ecology, conservation, environmental science, wildlife management, and sustainable resource management through a combination of academic learning and practical field-based experience.
