COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Midwifery is a 240-credit-point professionally accredited program designed to prepare students for registration and practice as qualified midwives. The course includes 230 credit points of core units that provide comprehensive knowledge and practical skills across all stages of maternity care. Students study anatomy and physiology, primary healthcare, pregnancy and childbirth, pharmacology, breastfeeding, psychosocial health, emergency care, and evidence-based practice. The curriculum focuses on providing woman-centred, culturally safe, and evidence-based care throughout pregnancy, labour, birth, postpartum, and newborn care, with particular attention to First Nations Australian women’s health and global midwifery perspectives. A major feature of the degree is the extensive clinical practice component, where students complete multiple midwifery practice units across the program. These placements prepare students for real-world maternity care through hands-on experience in supporting women during both normal and complex pregnancies and births. Students also develop skills in emergency management, communication, professional collaboration, and transition to professional practice. In addition, students complete one specialist elective unit, which varies depending on whether they enter through the standard pathway or as registered nurses. Overall, the program combines academic study, simulation training, and extensive clinical experience to ensure graduates are fully prepared to provide safe, compassionate, and professional midwifery care in diverse healthcare settings.
