COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science (Honours) is a 320-credit-point program designed to prepare students for professional careers as medical scientists in diagnostic pathology. The course includes 240 credit points of core units that build a strong foundation in biological and medical sciences, covering areas such as cellular biology, anatomy and physiology, microbiology, chemistry, immunology, biochemistry, molecular biology, pathophysiology, and biotechnology. Students also gain specialised knowledge in key diagnostic disciplines including haematology, clinical chemistry, transfusion medicine, histology, and anatomical pathology. A major feature of the program is practical training through structured laboratory placements, where students complete two professional placements to develop real-world diagnostic and laboratory skills in accredited healthcare settings. These experiences help students apply theoretical knowledge to clinical practice, improving their ability to analyse samples and interpret results accurately. In addition to the core curriculum, students complete 80 credit points of specialist electives through either a Professional Research Project or a Professional Practice Experience pathway. The research option involves advanced study, research design, and thesis work, while the practice pathway focuses on extended laboratory placements and applied professional training. Overall, the degree integrates scientific theory, laboratory expertise, research skills, and clinical experience to prepare graduates for careers in diagnostic pathology, medical research, and advanced healthcare laboratory services.
