COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Social Work (Qualifying) curriculum is designed to provide a comprehensive foundation in social work knowledge, skills, and professional practice. Students begin with Understanding Social Work: Foundational Knowledge and Skills for Practice, which introduces core concepts and essential capabilities. The program emphasizes cultural awareness through First Nations Knowledge and Social Work Practice with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, ensuring respectful and informed engagement with Indigenous communities. Units such as Psychosocial Health and Wellbeing Across the Lifespan and Intersectionality and Social Justice in Social Work Practice explore human development, diversity, and systemic inequalities. Ethical and Legal Issues in Practice prepares students to navigate professional responsibilities and complex decision-making. Practical experience is a key component, with Social Work Field Education placements allowing students to apply their learning in real-world settings. Additional subjects, including Working with Families, Groups and Communities, Contemporary Social Policy and Social Work, and Family and Structural Violence, develop skills for addressing social challenges. Social Work Research for Practice and Social Work Theories and the Practice Context strengthen analytical and theoretical understanding. Overall, the program equips students with the knowledge and experience needed to become competent and ethical social work professionals.
