COURSE CURRICULUM

The Biotechnology and Diagnostic Pathology major is designed to provide advanced knowledge and practical skills in biomedical research, molecular diagnostics, pathology, and medical laboratory science. Students in this course must complete 23 or 24 units (144 credits), including the core structure and a 16-unit Biotechnology and Diagnostic Pathology major without any additional minor. The program combines biotechnology with clinical laboratory sciences to prepare graduates for careers in healthcare, diagnostics, pharmaceuticals, and research industries. Core areas of study include Measurement and Evaluation in Health Science, Clinical Biochemistry, Medical Microbiology, Molecular Cell Biology, Medical Pathophysiology, Histological and Cytological Techniques, Haematology and Transfusion Science, and Cell and Tissue Biology. These units provide strong understanding of disease mechanisms, laboratory diagnostics, microbiology, blood science, tissue analysis, and molecular biology techniques used in modern healthcare and biomedical research. The course places significant emphasis on practical laboratory training through residential school components and hands-on scientific learning. Students develop skills in disease detection, diagnostic testing, and translational medical research using advanced biotechnological methods. A key feature of this major is that it provides a direct pathway into the fourth year of the Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science (Honours). Overall, the program prepares graduates for professional roles in hospitals, pathology laboratories, medical research organisations, and biopharmaceutical industries.
