COURSE CURRICULUM

The Mechanical Engineering major is designed to develop strong knowledge in the design, analysis, manufacturing, and maintenance of mechanical systems using principles of physics, materials science, and applied mathematics. The program begins with foundational engineering units such as Applied Computational Modelling, Engineering Statics, Materials for Engineers, Engineering Dynamics, Fundamentals of Sustainable Energy, Creative Engineering, and Engineering Futures, which build essential analytical and problem-solving skills. Students then progress into core mechanical subjects including Fluid Mechanics, Structural Mechanics, Thermodynamics, Maintenance Engineering, Fluid Machinery, Bulk Materials Handling, Design of Machine Elements, Materials and Manufacturing, Mechanical Design Practice, Energy Conversion, and Dynamic System Modelling and Control. These units prepare students to work with machines, engines, thermal systems, fluid systems, and industrial equipment. A significant focus is placed on thermofluid systems through Capstone Thermofluid Engineering, where students apply knowledge to real-world engineering problems. The program also includes industry and innovation-focused electives such as Mining Technology, Mine Planning and Design, Mine Management and Safety, Humanitarian Engineering Project, Entrepreneurship and Start-ups, and Operations Management, allowing students to tailor their studies to specific career paths. Overall, this major equips graduates with strong technical and practical skills for careers in mechanical design, manufacturing, energy systems, mining operations, and industrial engineering, with emphasis on innovation, efficiency, and real-world application.
