COURSE CURRICULUM

The Graduate Certificate in Counselling requires students to complete a total of four units, which include three core units and one elective. The three core units provide the foundation for understanding the principles and practices of counselling. In the first semester, students undertake Fundamentals of Counselling (CNSL41100), which introduces the basic skills needed to engage effectively in a counselling setting, and Psychotherapy and Counselling Theories (CNSL41110), which explores key theoretical frameworks that underpin counselling practice. In the second semester, students complete Spiritual Perspectives on Emotional Disorders (CNSL41120), which examines the relationship between spirituality, emotional health, and approaches to healing within the context of a Christian worldview.Alongside these core units, students choose one elective unit, allowing them to tailor their learning experience to specific interests within the field. The available options include Introduction to Psychology for Counselling (CNSL41160), offered in semester one, which provides a broad overview of psychological principles relevant to counselling practice. Alternatively, students may select Interpersonal Approach and Treatment Strategies (CNSL41200), offered in semester two, which focuses on developing strategies for effective therapeutic relationships, or Systemic and Family Therapy Approaches (CNSL41240), offered in semester one, which introduces the principles of working with families and groups through a systemic lens.By combining these core and elective units, the course offers both a structured foundation and the flexibility to explore areas of personal or professional interest. This ensures students develop essential counselling skills, theoretical knowledge, and an appreciation of the spiritual and psychological dimensions of emotional wellbeing, while also preparing them for further study in the Master of Counselling program.
