COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Mathematical Sciences (Advanced) at Australian National University is a 96-unit research-intensive postgraduate program designed for students seeking advanced expertise in mathematics and its applications across science, technology, finance, and industry. The degree combines 72 units of advanced coursework with a 24-unit research component, while requiring at least 24 units at the 8000 level. Students complete a minimum of 48 units from a broad range of specialised mathematics courses covering areas such as algebra, analysis, topology, differential equations, numerical optimisation, probability theory, stochastic analysis, mathematical physics, cryptography, scientific computing, bioinformatics, environmental modelling, and industrial modelling. This flexible structure enables students to tailor their studies to both theoretical and applied interests while developing strong analytical and quantitative skills. Up to 24 units may also be selected from related disciplines including statistics, economics, computer science, and approved university electives, encouraging interdisciplinary expertise. The program culminates in a 24-unit Mathematics Research Project (MATH8701), undertaken under the supervision of an academic researcher and often spanning consecutive semesters. Progression to the research component requires students to achieve a minimum 70% weighted average mark in their first 48 units and secure approval from an identified supervisor. Students who do not meet these requirements may transfer to the Master of Science in Mathematical Sciences or the Graduate Diploma of Science.
