COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Visual Arts requires completion of 144 units and combines intensive studio practice with art theory, history, and professional development. Students may complete a maximum of 60 units at the 1000 level and must undertake at least 12 units in Transdisciplinary Problem-Solving courses. A minimum of 84 units must be drawn from core visual arts study, including 48 units of compulsory courses that build foundational skills in art history, curatorial studies, drawing, contemporary art practice, and independent creative research. These culminate in advanced capstone projects where students develop, extend, and consolidate an independent studio-based research project. Students also complete introductory and intermediate studio courses across disciplines such as ceramics, glass, painting, photomedia, moving image, printmaking, sculpture, textiles, and drawing, allowing them to develop both technical skills and creative versatility. The program includes at least 6 units of art history at the 2000 level, ensuring contextual understanding of artistic practice, as well as 6 units focused on professional practice, which may involve internships, community engagement, institutional projects, or field-based research. Students may also include up to 12 units from related fields such as design, art history, or relevant interdisciplinary subjects. The remaining 48 units are electives offered by ANU, allowing students to broaden their academic experience. Overall, the degree integrates studio practice, critical theory, and professional engagement to prepare graduates for careers in the creative arts, cultural industries, curation, education, and further artistic development.
