COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Political Science requires the completion of 144 units and provides a comprehensive foundation in political theory, institutions, research methods, and comparative politics. Students may complete a maximum of 60 units at the 1000 level and must undertake at least 18 units at the 3000 level, including a minimum of 12 units in Transdisciplinary Problem-Solving courses. The degree includes at least 72 units of core political science study, beginning with compulsory introductory courses in politics and political science research methods. Students then develop expertise in political theory, Australian and comparative politics, and advanced qualitative, quantitative, and interpretive research methods. The curriculum also includes courses that strengthen social science inquiry skills through subjects such as public policy, social research, statistics, international relations, and population studies. At the advanced level, students complete at least 24 units of 3000-level coursework, focusing on specialised topics such as democracy and dictatorship, elections and political behaviour, human rights, gender and identity politics, lobbying, comparative European politics, and U.S. politics. Students also gain regional and historical expertise through courses examining Asia, the Pacific, the Middle East, Europe, Russia, Indigenous Australia, migration, and political development. The program allows substantial flexibility through 48 to 72 units of electives, enabling students to broaden their knowledge across disciplines. Overall, the degree combines rigorous political analysis, methodological training, and regional expertise to prepare graduates for careers in government, public policy, international affairs, research, advocacy, and related fields.
