COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Philosophy (Honours) – Humanities and Social Sciences (PhB HaSS) requires students to complete 192 units within a rigorous, research-focused curriculum. Students may take a maximum of 60 units at the 1000 level and must complete at least 12 units in Transdisciplinary Problem-Solving courses. The program includes 144 units of structured study, beginning with introductory Humanities and Social Sciences disciplinary courses, followed by at least 6 units in theory and methods, 6 units focused on Indigenous themes, and 6 units examining Asia or the Pacific. A distinctive feature of the degree is the completion of 36 units of PhB-specific Advanced Studies Courses, including introductory, intermediate, and advanced research-focused subjects that develop independent inquiry and analytical skills. Students must also complete at least 18 units from approved majors or minors across areas such as anthropology, history, international relations, economics, sociology, philosophy, gender studies, political science, area studies, and a wide range of language programs. The final 48 units consist of an Honours specialisation in a chosen discipline, such as Economics, History, International Relations, Philosophy, Psychology, Political Science, Sociology, or Anthropology, culminating in a substantial independent research project. Up to 48 units of free electives may also be included, allowing students to broaden their studies. Overall, the degree combines disciplinary depth, interdisciplinary learning, regional expertise, and advanced research training to prepare graduates for leadership, research, and postgraduate study in the humanities and social sciences.
