COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Pacific Studies at ANU requires completion of 144 units designed to provide both core disciplinary grounding and flexible, interdisciplinary exploration of Oceania. Students must complete 36 units of compulsory courses, including foundational and advanced subjects such as PASI1011 Pacific Encounters: An Introduction to Pacific Studies, PASI1012 Pacific Worlds: Critical Inquiry in Oceania, PASI2001 Pacific Studies in a Globalising World, PASI3001 Politics and Development in the Contemporary Pacific, PASI3002 Gender and Sexuality in the Pacific, and PASI3013 Environment and Development in the Pacific. These courses establish a strong understanding of Pacific histories, cultures, politics, and contemporary regional challenges. In addition, students complete at least 36 units from thematic areas including anthropology and archaeology, history, politics and security, environment and migration, gender and linguistics, and field-based learning such as ENVS2005 Islands Sustainable Development: Fiji Field School or PASI3005 Pacific Islands Field School. Language study options may also be included through approved language codes such as CHIN, FREN, or INDN. The degree requires a minimum of 18 units at 3000-level, ensuring advanced study in later years, and at least 12 units of Transdisciplinary Problem-Solving courses to build cross-disciplinary skills. Finally, students complete at least 48 units of electives from across ANU, allowing flexibility to tailor the degree toward personal interests or career pathways. Overall, the program combines structured Pacific-focused study with broad interdisciplinary learning.
