COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Music at the Australian National University requires completion of 144 units and is designed to develop both artistic excellence and critical understanding in music. Students may complete a maximum of 60 units at the 1000 level and must undertake at least 84 units in Music (MUSI) courses or approved music majors, along with at least 12 units in Transdisciplinary Problem-Solving courses. The degree begins with foundational training in music theory and aural skills through MUSI1117, followed by repeated study in music analysis through MUSI2231, allowing students to deepen their analytical understanding of diverse musical styles. Students also engage with broader perspectives in music through courses such as music and globalisation, digital music and AI, and music and politics, which explore the relationship between music, society, and technology. Additional cultural and contextual studies may include Indigenous Australian music, ethnomusicology, music history, and music and wellbeing, providing a wide understanding of music’s social and cultural roles. Students choose a 48-unit major in either Music Practice or Contemporary Music Production, allowing them to specialise in performance, composition, or production pathways. The remaining 48 units consist of electives offered by ANU, enabling interdisciplinary exploration. Overall, the degree combines technical training, creative development, and academic study to prepare graduates for careers as performers, composers, producers, educators, and professionals in the global music industry.
