COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Medical Science at the Australian National University requires completion of 144 units and provides a structured pathway into biomedical and health sciences. Students may complete a maximum of 60 units at the 1000 level and must undertake at least 30 units at the 3000 level, ensuring advanced study in specialised biomedical fields. The degree includes 48 units of compulsory foundational courses covering key areas such as biology, microbiology, genetics, biochemistry, nutrition, and chemistry, providing a strong base in life and medical sciences. Students also complete essential anatomy and physiology courses, along with a professional practice subject that introduces real-world applications in medical science. A further requirement includes quantitative research skills training to develop competence in experimental design, data analysis, and scientific reasoning. The program allows limited additional study in introductory biomedical subjects such as human biology, genetics, and cell biology. At the advanced level, students undertake at least 24 units of 3000-level coursework in areas such as immunology, cancer biology, infection and immunity, genomics, neuroscience, biomedical imaging, and population health, ensuring strong specialised knowledge. Students may also complete research-focused or topic-based courses in medical science. The remaining 48 units are electives offered by ANU, allowing flexibility to broaden academic interests.
