COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Mathematical Sciences at ANU requires completion of 144 units and is designed to provide advanced training in mathematical theory, modelling, and applied problem-solving. Students may complete a maximum of 60 units at the 1000-level and must include at least 12 units of Transdisciplinary Problem-Solving courses. A minimum of 36 units must be completed at the 3000-level within the Mathematics (MATH) subject area to ensure advanced disciplinary depth. The program includes 84 units of structured mathematics coursework, beginning with 30 units of compulsory core courses such as Advanced Mathematics and Applications 1 and 2, Applied Mathematics I, Advanced Analysis (Metric Spaces and Applications), and Advanced Algebra (Groups, Rings and Linear Algebra). Students also complete 6 units from either Discrete Mathematical Models or Introduction to Mathematical Thinking: Problem Solving and Proofs, which strengthen foundational reasoning and proof skills. In addition, students must complete at least 36 units of advanced 3000-level mathematics courses, allowing deeper specialisation in areas of pure or applied mathematics. The degree also requires between 12 and 24 units from related disciplines such as physics, computer science, statistics, biology, psychology, earth sciences, or environmental science, supporting interdisciplinary application of mathematical methods. The remaining units include elective courses from ANU. Overall, the program develops strong analytical, abstract reasoning, and modelling skills, preparing graduates for careers in research, data science, finance, engineering, technology, and further advanced mathematical study.
