COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Laws (Honours) at ANU requires completion of 192 units and is designed to provide comprehensive legal education combined with advanced analytical and research training. Students may complete a maximum of 60 units at the 1000-level and must include at least 12 units from Transdisciplinary Problem-Solving courses. The program consists of 96 units of compulsory core law courses covering foundational and advanced legal areas, including Foundations of Australian Law, Torts, Contracts, Criminal Law and Procedure, Public Law, Constitutional Law, Administrative Law, Corporations Law, Property, Equity and Trusts, Evidence, Litigation and Dispute Management, Legal Research and Writing, Legal Theory, and International Law. These courses establish a strong grounding in both substantive and procedural law as well as legal reasoning and ethics. Students then complete 48 units of 4000-level law courses, which include advanced and specialised study and must incorporate at least 6 units of a research capstone course such as a dissertation, internship, moot court, or specialised legal research subject. The program also requires 48 units of electives, which may be law or non-law courses and can contribute to transdisciplinary learning. These electives allow students to specialise in areas such as corporate law, international law, public law, or social justice. The Honours classification is based on overall performance across all law courses. Overall, the degree prepares students for legal practice, policy work, and advanced research by combining doctrinal knowledge, practical skills, and critical legal analysis.
