COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Languages at ANU requires completion of 144 units and is designed to develop advanced proficiency in multiple languages alongside cultural and interdisciplinary study. Students may complete a maximum of 60 units at the 1000-level, must complete at least 18 units at the 3000-level, and are required to include at least 12 units of Transdisciplinary Problem-Solving courses. The program includes a minimum of 84 units drawn from structured language study pathways. This consists of either 48 units from a single language major such as Chinese, French, Japanese, Arabic, or Spanish, or 24 units from an advanced language minor combined with additional advanced language coursework. Students also complete 24 units from a second language minor in a different language, ensuring breadth of linguistic study. The degree includes further flexibility through courses in related language and cultural areas such as linguistics and regional studies. A set of transdisciplinary courses allows students to explore how language interacts with global issues, including translation, communication, health, migration, and cultural identity. Students may also take up to 12 units from related majors such as Asian Studies, English, Computer Science, Mathematics, or Linguistics. The remaining 48 units are flexible electives offered by ANU, allowing further specialization or interdisciplinary exploration. Overall, the program prepares graduates for careers in translation, diplomacy, international relations, education, media, and global organisations by combining strong language proficiency with cultural, analytical, and communication skills essential in a multilingual world.
