COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of International Security Studies (BINSS) at ANU requires completion of 144 units and provides a structured pathway to understanding global security challenges, conflict, and strategic policy issues. Students may complete a maximum of 60 units at the 1000-level, must complete at least 18 units at the 3000-level, and are required to complete at least 12 units in Transdisciplinary Problem-Solving courses. The degree includes 36 units of compulsory courses covering core areas such as Introduction to International Security Studies, Causes of International Conflict, Security Concepts in the Asia-Pacific, Australia’s Security in a Contested Asia, and International Security in the 21st Century. Students may also take up to 12 units of related electives including topics such as the Korean War, Australian intelligence, and Pacific security issues. A minimum of 6 units must come from methods and concepts courses such as foreign policy analysis, research methods, game theory, or quantitative and qualitative approaches in social science. A further 30 units must be completed from language, regional studies, or thematic areas including international relations, political science, history, criminology, geography, peace and conflict studies, and various Asian, European, and Middle Eastern language and area studies. Internship opportunities are also available through programs like the Australian National Internship Program. The remaining 48 units are flexible electives offered by ANU. Overall, the program combines theoretical knowledge, regional expertise, and analytical skills to prepare graduates for careers in defence, intelligence, diplomacy, policy analysis, and international organisations.
