COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Health Science requires completion of 144 units and is designed to provide a strong interdisciplinary foundation in biomedical science, population health, and social and behavioural aspects of health. Students may complete a maximum of 60 units at the 1000-level and must complete at least 18 units of 3000-level courses, along with a minimum of 12 units in Transdisciplinary Problem-Solving courses. The core of the degree consists of 72 units of compulsory courses covering essential areas such as biology, chemistry, anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, nutrition, disease processes, research methods, and health systems. Key subjects include Foundations of Life, Biochemistry and Nutrition, Cell Physiology in Health and Disease, Chemistry 1 and 2, Health in the 21st Century, Research Methods in Health Sciences, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health, Anatomy and Physiology (1–3), and Pathogenesis of Human Disease. Students also complete 6 units in health systems or global health, and 18 units of guided electives, including at least 6 units at the 3000-level. These electives include applied “Health in Practice” courses such as microbiology, infection and immunity, psychology, population health, health policy, biomedical imaging, research projects, and science communication. Students also complete 6 units from Culture, Society and Health subjects, which explore the social and cultural dimensions of health. The remaining 48 units are flexible electives offered by ANU. Overall, the program integrates science, medicine, and social perspectives to prepare graduates for careers in health, medicine, allied health, research, and public health.
