COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Environment and Sustainability requires completion of 144 units and is structured to provide students with a strong interdisciplinary foundation in environmental science, policy, and social sciences. Students may complete a maximum of 60 units at the 1000-level and must complete at least 30 units of 3000-level courses drawn from approved study areas or specialisations. A minimum of 12 units must also be taken in Transdisciplinary Problem-Solving courses, supporting integrative and applied thinking skills. The core program includes 48 units of Environment and Sustainability courses, with 36 units of compulsory subjects such as Introduction to Environmental and Social Research, Fundamentals of Environment and Sustainability, Human Ecology, Indigenous Cultural and Natural Resource Management, Environmental Policy, and Complex Environmental Problems in Action. Students also complete 12 additional units from applied environmental courses including GIS and Spatial Analysis, Environmental Field School, Participatory Resource Management, or Environmental Chemistry and Systems. A further 12 units are taken from foundational science courses such as Biology, Chemistry, Earth System Science, Environmental Geography, or Science Communication. Students then complete 24 units in one chosen specialisation, including areas such as Biodiversity and Forest Management, Climate Change, Land and Water, or Agricultural Innovation. The remaining 48 units are flexible electives offered by ANU. Overall, the program integrates science, policy, and social perspectives to prepare graduates to address complex environmental and sustainability challenges.
