COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Software Engineering at ANU requires completion of 192 units and is structured to develop strong foundations in computing, systems engineering, and professional software development. Students may complete a maximum of 60 units at the 1000-level and must include at least 12 units of Transdisciplinary Problem-Solving courses. The core of the program consists of 108 units of compulsory courses covering key areas of software engineering, computer science, and engineering systems. These include foundational computing and programming subjects such as COMP1600 Foundations of Computing, COMP2100 Software Construction, COMP2120 Software Engineering, COMP3600 Algorithms, and COMP3900 Human-Computer Interaction, as well as systems-focused courses like COMP2300 Computer Organisation and Program Execution, COMP2310 Systems, Networks and Concurrency, and COMP2400 Relational Databases. Students also complete engineering design sequence courses (ENGN1211 through ENGN3301), practical experience, and advanced topics such as software quality, digital systems, and microprocessors. In addition, students undertake a 12-unit capstone or individual project and select from courses in programming, structured programming, mathematics, and engineering fundamentals. The program also includes 24 units of additional COMP or ENGN courses and 24 units of ANU electives, allowing flexibility and interdisciplinary study. Finally, students complete formal Engineering Honours enrolment in their final semester. Overall, the degree integrates theory, practice, and systems thinking to prepare graduates for advanced careers in software engineering.
