COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Engineering (Research and Development) (Honours) requires completion of 192 units and is designed to integrate core engineering education with extensive research experience. Students may complete a maximum of 60 units at the 1000-level and must include at least 12 units of Transdisciplinary Problem-Solving courses. The program includes 90 units of compulsory engineering and research-focused courses covering foundational engineering design, mechanics, electronics, thermodynamics, computer systems, signals and systems, and advanced systems-based design and analysis. It also includes practical experience and a major research and development project sequence, including ENGN2706 and ENGN4712, which develops students’ ability to conduct independent engineering research. In addition, students complete 12 units of further R&D project courses, allowing deeper engagement with applied research. Foundational studies include 6 units of programming, 6 units of physics, and 12 units of mathematics across two levels. Students then complete 48 units in one engineering major such as Mechatronic Systems, Renewable Energy Systems, or Aerospace Systems, with part contributing to core requirements. A further 6 units are taken from engineering courses and 24 units from ANU electives, supporting interdisciplinary learning. The degree also has strict academic performance requirements, including a 75% weighted average to progress and an 80% honours mark to graduate with the R&D Honours award. Students must enrol in ENGN4100 Engineering Honours in their final semester. Overall, the program strongly emphasises research excellence, technical depth, and innovation in engineering practice.
