COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Biotechnology requires completion of 144 units designed to build strong foundations in biology, chemistry, and applied biological sciences, alongside advanced specialization and flexible study options. Students may complete a maximum of 60 units at the 1000-level and must complete at least 30 units of 3000-level Biology (BIOL) courses to ensure advanced disciplinary expertise. A minimum of 12 units must also be taken in Transdisciplinary Problem-Solving courses. The core of the degree consists of 54 units of compulsory courses, including foundational biology subjects such as BIOL1020 Foundations of Life and BIOL1030 Diversity of Life, as well as advanced molecular and genetic courses like BIOL2161 Genes: Replication and Expression, BIOL2162 Molecular Genetic Techniques, and BIOL3161 Genomics and its Applications. Students also complete essential chemistry subjects including CHEM1101 Chemistry 1, CHEM1201 Chemistry 2, CHEM2211 Chemical Biology I, and CHEM2208 Chemical Biology II. In addition, students choose 6 units from quantitative biology courses and 6 units from bioethics or workplace-focused biology courses. At least 24 units must come from advanced 3000-level electives such as Biosecurity, Plant Science and Climate Change, Advanced Microscopy, or research-based projects, with a limited number of research or special topic units allowed in biotechnology areas. The remaining 48 units are elective courses from ANU, allowing interdisciplinary exploration across biology, chemistry, medicine, neuroscience, and related fields, supporting broad scientific and professional development.
