COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Asian Studies requires completion of 144 units, structured to combine language study, disciplinary knowledge, and flexible electives. Students must complete a maximum of 60 units at the 1000-level and a minimum of 18 units at the 3000-level to ensure advanced study. A key requirement is at least 24 units in Asian Language courses, reflecting the program’s emphasis on language proficiency, along with a minimum of 12 units in Transdisciplinary Problem-Solving courses that build applied, cross-disciplinary skills. The core component includes 96 units in total, beginning with 12 units of compulsory foundation courses: ASIA1025 Asia and the Pacific: Power, Diversity and Change and ASIA1030 Asia and the Pacific in Motion, which introduce regional frameworks and contemporary dynamics. Students then complete 48 units from a selected major, such as Asian History, Chinese Studies, Japanese Studies, South Asian Studies, Southeast Asian Studies, or Asian and Pacific Culture, Media, and Gender, or from language majors including Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Indonesian, Hindi, Sanskrit, Thai, or Vietnamese. Additionally, students complete 12–24 units from Asian language minors or related majors to satisfy language requirements and deepen specialization. The remaining 48 units are elective courses from ANU, allowing further academic exploration and interdisciplinary learning. Overall, the program integrates language mastery, regional expertise, and broad academic flexibility.
