Out of the total program, up to 60 units can be from introductory 1000-level courses, while at least 48 units must come from advanced 4000-level Computer Science (COMP) courses. The degree includes 78 units of compulsory core courses such as Programming as Problem Solving (Advanced), Structured Programming, Software Construction, Computer Architecture, Algorithms, Theory of Computation, Computing R&D Methods, and two extended research projects (COMP3770 and COMP4550) completed over consecutive semesters, which provide hands-on research experience. Students also complete 18 units of mathematics or statistics subjects, including courses like Discrete Mathematical Models, Mathematical Applications, Statistical Techniques, and Mathematical Thinking. Additionally, 24 units must be from advanced 4000-level Computer Science electives, allowing deeper specialization in areas like AI or systems. The program also requires 12 units of transdisciplinary problem-solving courses to develop interdisciplinary thinking across fields such as science, society, and innovation. Finally, students choose at least 12 units of general electives, often from computing or other ANU disciplines. Overall, the structure ensures a balance of core computing knowledge, mathematical foundation, advanced specialization, research training, and interdisciplinary skills to prepare graduates for careers in technology, research, and innovation.
