COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Human Rights/Bachelor of Laws curriculum is a five-year double degree that combines comprehensive legal training with specialised study in human rights, ethics, politics, history, and social justice. In Year 1, students establish foundations through legal research, contract law, Australian public law, commercial law, legal institutions and human rights, ethics, global society, and Indigenous human rights. Year 2 develops legal knowledge through criminal law, torts, and business organisations, while exploring justice, authority, Australian Indigenous history, security, terrorism, and human rights, alongside core curriculum and pro bono community engagement. In Year 3, students study statutory interpretation, property, land law, civil procedure, alternative dispute resolution, human rights and criminal justice, Australian human rights law and policy, and theories of rights. Students also undertake at least 80 hours of pro bono legal placement after completing the required community legal engagement unit. Year 4 advances their knowledge through evidence, legal ethics, constitutional law, equity and trusts, legal theory, human rights in history, social policy, and contemporary moral issues. In Year 5, students complete administrative and international law alongside subjects such as international humanitarian law, human rights advocacy, world politics, justice, and law electives. Overall, the curriculum develops legal reasoning, critical thinking, research, advocacy, ethical decision-making, and professional skills, preparing graduates for careers in legal practice, human rights advocacy, government, policy, international organisations, community services, and social justice, while the Law component provides the academic foundation for admission to the Australian legal profession.
