COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Education (Secondary)/Bachelor of Arts curriculum combines professional teacher education with specialised study through an Arts major and minor, preparing students for a career as a secondary school teacher. In Year 1, students establish foundations in learning and teaching, literacy and numeracy, contemporary learning environments, and their chosen Arts disciplines, while completing the required LANTITE literacy and numeracy tests. Year 2 develops practical teaching capabilities through Effective Teaching units, curriculum planning, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander knowledges, and further Arts major and minor studies. Students also begin substantial professional experience, including a 15-day and 20-day placement, allowing them to apply educational theory in real school settings. In Year 3, the focus moves toward advanced teaching practice, including positive learning environments, inclusive education, supporting students with disability, and curriculum, pedagogy, and assessment for both teaching areas. Students also complete community engagement and continue their Arts major studies. Year 4 strengthens professional capabilities through assessment and data-informed practice, reflective teaching, professional identity, and advanced Arts subjects. A further 25-day professional experience provides extensive classroom exposure. Students also complete senior secondary curriculum, pedagogy, and assessment units for their teaching areas. Overall, the four-year curriculum balances academic study, specialist subject knowledge, professional teacher preparation, community engagement, and extensive practical experience, equipping graduates with the skills, confidence, and adaptability needed to become effective and reflective secondary educators.
