Bachelor of Education in Secondary

The four-year Bachelor of Education (Secondary) curriculum is designed to prepare students to become qualified secondary teachers with specialist knowledge in two teaching areas. In Year 1, students develop foundations in learning and teaching, literacy and numeracy, contemporary learning environments, and introductory studies in both chosen disciplines, while completing the required LANTITE literacy and numeracy tests. Year 2 builds professional teaching capabilities through Effective Teaching units, curriculum planning, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander knowledges, and further discipline studies. Students also begin supervised professional experience, completing 15-day and 20-day placements to gain practical classroom exposure. In Year 3, the program progresses to advanced teaching preparation through positive learning environments, inclusive education, philosophy of education, social justice, community engagement, and junior curriculum, pedagogy and assessment studies for both teaching areas. Students continue developing specialist disciplinary knowledge through higher-level units. Year 4 focuses on assessment and data-informed practice, reflective teaching, professional identity, and advanced curriculum and pedagogy. Students complete a further 25-day professional experience placement and undertake senior secondary curriculum, pedagogy, and assessment studies in both teaching areas. The program progressively develops students from learners of education into independent teaching professionals through a combination of theoretical study, subject expertise, mentoring, and practical school experience. Overall, graduates gain strong knowledge across two teaching disciplines, effective classroom and communication skills, inclusive teaching capabilities, assessment expertise, and professional confidence, preparing them for diverse secondary teaching careers and opportunities within the broader education sector.
