COURSE CURRICULUM
The five-year Bachelor of Arts (Western Civilisation)/Master of Teaching (Secondary) curriculum combines an intellectually rigorous Western Civilisation degree with advanced secondary teacher education, allowing students to develop a first teaching area and an approved second teaching area. During Years 1–3, students study Western intellectual, political, literary, philosophical, artistic, religious, and scientific traditions through units covering Western political thought, literature, metaphysics, art and architecture, liberalism, religion, philosophy, ethics, democracy, and scientific revolutions. Students also complete a minor, arts electives, community engagement, and the required LANTITE literacy and numeracy tests. From Year 4, the program transitions into professional teacher preparation, introducing curriculum, pedagogy and assessment for both teaching areas, foundations of learning and adolescent development, professional practices, inclusive education, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and education, and literacy and numeracy across the secondary curriculum. Students undertake substantial professional experience placements, including 25-day placements in each of the first two teaching stages. In Year 5, students complete senior curriculum, pedagogy and assessment studies for both teaching areas, applied educational assessment, teacher inquiry, and evidence-based practice, alongside a 30-day professional experience. Overall, the course develops strong disciplinary knowledge, teaching expertise, practical classroom experience, and reflective professional capabilities, preparing graduates to teach their chosen specialist subjects effectively in secondary schools.
