Canada’s welcoming nature has made it one of the top destinations for international students to study abroad. With a strong emphasis on inclusivity and multiculturalism, the country offers a supportive environment to students from all backgrounds.
The Post-Graduation Work Permit enables you to gain Canadian work experience, providing a strong foundation for students looking to pursue global work opportunities or obtain Permanent Residency (PR).
On June 25, 2025, Canada made a significant policy shift, updating its PGWP eligibility rules that directly impact future work opportunities.
These changes demonstrate the country’s intention to align international student pathways with its market needs and immigration objectives.
In this blog, we shall explore the latest updates in Canada’s PGWP eligibility rules to increase your chances of a work permit in the country:
Since November 2024, the Canadian Government requires students pursuing non-degree studies (except bachelor's and master's) to graduate from a program linked to jobs that are being prioritised under the Express Entry list, where there are labour shortages, to apply for a PGWP.
Note: Students who applied for a study permit before June 25, 2025, will still be eligible for PGWP if their field of study was on the list when they applied for a study permit, even if it has since been removed.
Canada's 2025 changes to the Post-Graduation Work Permit Policy (PGWP) are a game-changer for international students. With the introduction of 119 new programs of study and the elimination of 178 older ones, more than ever it is worth picking your program of study carefully.
Keeping current with Canadian immigration policies will enable you to make intelligent, forward-looking academic decisions to build a successful career and pathway to permanent residency.
With the right words and preparation, you can open the doors to your dream university.
