Barton College is a private liberal arts institution located in Wilson, North Carolina, affiliated with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). Barton College has a rich history dating back to its incorporation as Atlantic Christian College on May 1, 1902. The college was established by the North Carolina Christian Missionary Convention after acquiring the Kinsey Seminary in 1901. At its inception, the college had 107 students and a faculty of seven. Throughout its history, Barton College has maintained its connection with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), reflecting its foundational values and mission. On September 6, 1990, the institution changed its name to Barton College to honor Barton Warren Stone, one of the founders of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), who was active in eastern North Carolina. This change marked a significant moment in the college's evolution and recognition of its heritage. In the same year, Barton College expanded its educational offerings by opening the Barton Weekend College, aimed at providing more flexible learning options through its Division of Lifelong Learning. The college has also maintained accreditation by the Southern Association for Colleges and Schools since 1953, ensuring that it meets high standards of academic quality and institutional integrity.
