ABOUT UNIVERSITY
Falmouth University is a public institution in Cornwall, England, specializing in the creative industries. It operates across two campuses located in the towns of Falmouth and Penryn. Originally founded in 1902 as the Falmouth School of Art, the university has undergone several transformations, later becoming the Falmouth College of Art and Design, then Falmouth College of Arts, and finally gaining full university status in 2012. As of 2023, the university serves around 7,000 students and offers a range of undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. The larger of its two campuses is Penryn Campus, which is run in partnership with the University of Exeter. The Falmouth Campus is located in the town center of Falmouth. The university's origins date back to the early 20th century when it was founded in response to a decline in Cornwall’s scientific and industrial activities, particularly those associated with mining. Initially a private venture, the school offered courses such as Freehand Drawing and Model Drawing. In 1938, the Local Education Authority took over the administration, leading to increased regulation and expansion. By the 1940s, the school came under the leadership of Stanley Wright, who laid the groundwork for future development. Course offerings expanded, allowing students to focus on either "art" or "craft" disciplines. In the 1950s, the institution moved to its current Woodlane location, occupying a site formerly known for its sub-tropical gardens. Under the leadership of Jack Bridger Chalker and later Michael Finn, the school broadened its curriculum to include commercial and junior design courses. It also built new studios and gained national recognition. The National Advisory Council for Art Education (NACAE) was formed during this time, marking an important phase in the university’s development. Today, Falmouth University stands as a prominent institution for creative education in the UK.
