City St George’s, University of London is a public research university based in London, England, and a member of the University of London. The university originated from the Northampton Institute, which was founded in 1894 to provide education and support for the working-class population in Islington. In 1966, it gained university status through a royal charter as The City University. The Inns of Court School of Law, established in 1852, merged with City in 2001, strengthening its position in legal education. In 2016, City joined the federal University of London and was renamed City, University of London. In 2024, it absorbed St George’s Hospital Medical School, which had been founded in 1834. The newly combined institution adopted the name City St George’s, University of London in 2025.The university maintains strong ties with the City of London, and the Lord Mayor of London serves as its rector. Its campuses are located across Central London, including the London Borough of Islington, the City of London, the West End, the East End, and the London Borough of Wandsworth. The university is organized into six schools and includes around forty academic departments and centers. Notable academic units include the Bayes Business School, the Department of Journalism, and the City Law School, which includes the former Inns of Court School of Law.City St George’s reported an annual income of 262.1 million pounds in the 2021–22 academic year, with 12.9 million pounds coming from research grants and contracts. Expenditures for the same period were 328.2 million pounds. The university is a founding member of the WC2 University Network, promoting collaboration among universities in global cities. It is also a member of the Association of MBAs, EQUIS, and Universities UK. Notable alumni include Mahatma Gandhi, Muhammad Ali Jinnah, members of the UK Parliament, governors, politicians, and corporate leaders.
