Course Curriculum

The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Education program at Memorial University requires students to successfully complete four courses as part of their doctoral studies. Core courses include Education 701A/B – Doctoral Seminar in Education: Area of Specialization and Education 702A/B – Advanced Educational Research. Students must register for the “A” portion of these courses in the Fall semester of their first year and the corresponding “B” portion in the following Winter semester, with an “NC” (No Grade Expected) assigned to the “A” portion until completion. In addition to these core courses, students are required to complete two additional graduate-level courses related to their research focus and area of specialization, selected in consultation with their supervisory committee to align with their academic and professional goals. Typically, students may undertake no more than four courses in total during their program. The curriculum may also include Education 7003–30 – Special Topics, offered as required to address emerging areas of study or specialized interests. Following coursework, students must complete both written and oral comprehensive examinations in accordance with the university’s general Ph.D. examination regulations. These assessments evaluate the student’s depth of knowledge, research preparedness, and ability to synthesize complex educational concepts within their chosen field of study.
