COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Statistics at ANU is a structured and advanced graduate program requiring the completion of 96 units designed to build strong theoretical foundations, applied expertise, and computational proficiency in modern statistical science. The program includes 48 units of compulsory coursework covering core areas such as statistical inference, regression modelling, Bayesian data analysis, graphical data analysis, stochastic processes, mathematical statistics, generalised linear modelling, and statistical learning. These foundational courses ensure students develop a deep understanding of both classical and contemporary statistical theory and practice. A further 24 units are taken from advanced statistical electives, allowing students to specialise in areas such as big data statistics, survival analysis, advanced stochastic processes, experimental design, time series analysis, and advanced statistical learning, thereby strengthening their ability to tackle complex real-world data problems. The remaining 24 units may be selected from a broad range of approved courses across fields such as computer science, mathematics, economics, econometrics, population health, and machine learning, enabling interdisciplinary flexibility and applied skill development. The program also supports research training through options such as a research essay or master’s thesis, preparing students for independent inquiry. Overall, the degree produces highly skilled statisticians capable of working across academia, industry, government, and data-intensive professions worldwide.
