COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Science (Advanced) in Quantitative Biology and Bioinformatics at ANU is a 96-unit, research-intensive program designed to train students in the computational, statistical, and mathematical analysis of complex biological data. The degree combines advanced coursework with a substantial research project, ensuring students develop both theoretical understanding and practical skills in modern bioinformatics and quantitative biology. The coursework component introduces foundational training in biology, programming, and statistical modelling, including subjects such as life sciences fundamentals, programming for scientists, and regression modelling. Students then progress to specialised electives in areas such as bioinformatics, data science for biologists, quantitative ecology, machine learning, and computational biomedicine, allowing them to build expertise aligned with their interests. The program also includes science and society courses that develop professional skills in communication, ethics, consulting, and the broader social context of scientific research. A central feature of the degree is the 48-unit research project, completed over consecutive semesters under academic supervision, where students conduct original research applying quantitative methods to biological problems. Entry into this stage requires strong academic performance and supervisor approval.
