Master of Science in Mathematical Sciences

COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Science in Mathematical Sciences at ANU is a 96-unit program designed to develop advanced analytical, computational, and theoretical expertise across modern mathematics and its applications. The degree consists of 72 units of coursework, including a minimum of 24 units at the 8000-level and at least 36 units from MATH-coded courses, ensuring strong disciplinary depth. Students complete at least 24 units of advanced mathematical study through 6000–8000 level MATH courses (excluding MATH6005), alongside 12 units of integrative mathematical subjects such as topics in mathematical physics, algebra, computational mathematics, special topics, or reading courses, which can be taken multiple times under different themes. The program also includes 12 units of Science and Society courses, allowing students to engage with communication, policy, ethics, and public engagement in science. Up to 24 units may be taken from related disciplines including computer science, statistics, physics, or economics, such as econometrics, game theory, and optimisation, enabling interdisciplinary skill development. Another 24 units may be completed through ANU electives, allowing further customization of study. The program incorporates capstone experiences embedded within advanced mathematical courses such as MATH6211, MATH6209, MATH6216, MATH8201, and MATH8705. Overall, the degree provides rigorous training in mathematical sciences while fostering flexibility, interdisciplinary learning, and preparation for research, industry, or further advanced study.
