Master of Environmental and Resource Economics

COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Environmental and Resource Economics at Australian National University is a 96-unit advanced postgraduate program designed to build strong foundations in economic theory, quantitative methods, and their application to environmental and resource management policy. The degree begins with a pre-sessional component that strengthens academic writing, mathematical methods, and econometrics to ensure students are fully prepared for advanced study. Core study includes 24 units of compulsory microeconomics, macroeconomics, mathematical methods, and econometric techniques, followed by 24 units of advanced compulsory courses such as environmental economics, agricultural and resource economics, energy economics, and advanced applied microeconomics. Students then complete at least 12 units of research-based coursework, including options like quantitative policy evaluation, applied econometrics, research essays, or research projects, allowing them to develop strong analytical and empirical research skills. In addition, students take at least 6 units from a broad selection of economics and econometrics electives covering topics such as public sector economics, development policy, financial economics, labour economics, forecasting, and applied micro-econometrics. Another 6 units are chosen from contextual courses in areas such as environmental governance, climate policy, sustainability, finance, Indigenous development, public policy, or national security, enabling interdisciplinary understanding of policy challenges. Up to 6 units of experiential learning, such as internships or applied policy projects, may also be included. Overall, the program prepares graduates for evidence-based policy roles in government, international organisations, consulting, and research, with strong emphasis on sustainability, resource efficiency, and economic decision-making.
