The Master of Applied Linguistics requires the completion of 120 credit points, combining core theoretical study, specialist electives and either a capstone project or a research thesis. Students begin with 40 credit points of compulsory core units that build essential foundations for advanced linguistic inquiry. These units include Diversity in First Nations Languages, which introduces the linguistic richness and cultural significance of Australia’s First Nations languages; Research Methods in Applied Linguistics, which equips students with key research tools and methodologies; Understanding Language Acquisition, which explores how language is learned across different ages and contexts; and Global Englishes in Context, which examines the development, variation and worldwide use of English. Together, these units prepare students to analyse language scientifically and apply linguistic concepts in practical, professional and cross-cultural contexts.Students then complete 40 to 60 credit points of specialist electives, allowing them to tailor their learning to personal and professional goals. At least 20 credit points must be selected from foundational applied linguistics units such as Applied Language Teaching Methodologies, Language Testing and Evaluation, Phonetics and Phonology, and Morphology and Syntax. Additional electives can be chosen from a wide range of topics, including semantics and pragmatics, intercultural communication, forensic linguistics, Indigenous research methodologies, Yolngu languages, language policy and revitalisation, and inclusive education. This flexible structure supports the development of expertise across areas such as TESOL, linguistic analysis, sociolinguistics, First Nations languages and language documentation.In the final component of the degree, students choose between a 20-credit-point capstone project or a 40-credit-point research thesis. The capstone project allows students to explore a linguistic issue or applied context through a supervised research investigation. The thesis pathway provides a more substantial research experience, completed over two sequential units, and is suited to students considering higher-degree research. By completing the required 120 credit points, students graduate with advanced analytical skills, cultural and linguistic insight, and professional capabilities relevant to language education, policy, research and community language work.
