COURSE CURRICULUM
The Graduate Certificate of Arts requires the completion of 40 credit points, allowing students to build a strong foundation in cultural, social and creative disciplines while tailoring their studies to their interests. The course begins with one compulsory core unit, Advocacy and Social Action, which introduces students to key concepts in social change, community engagement and the role of advocacy in shaping equitable societies. This unit provides essential analytical and practical skills that support learning across the rest of the program. Students then complete 30 credit points of specialist electives chosen from a wide range of study areas, including Creative Arts, Social Science, Indigenous Knowledges and Engagement, Indigenous Languages and Contemporary Social Issues and Indigenous Research Practice. These specialist areas offer rich opportunities to explore topics such as art and curation, gender and society, environmental justice, Indigenous sovereignties, Yolngu languages, creative writing, forensic linguistics, and community-led research methodologies. The Creative Arts options provide insight into artistic practices, museum studies, sound design and creative leadership, with opportunities to engage in hands-on creative projects. The Social Science stream allows students to analyse contemporary global and social issues, including climate change, crime and deviance, and international relations. The Indigenous Knowledges and Engagement stream offers in-depth perspectives on Indigenous land management, cultural knowledge, policy, sovereignty and reconciliation. Students interested in languages and cultural preservation can choose units focusing on Yolngu language, linguistics and First Nations language revitalisation practices. The Indigenous Research Practice stream equips students with culturally grounded research approaches and includes the opportunity to undertake a supervised research project.Recent course updates have refined elective availability, ensuring the program remains current, relevant and aligned with contemporary disciplinary priorities. Despite these changes, students continue to enjoy a wide selection of electives across all specialisations. Upon completing the 40 credit points, graduates will have developed strong analytical, communication and critical thinking skills applicable across government, community organisations, creative industries and further postgraduate study.
