The Bachelor of Genetics at ANU requires completion of 144 units and is structured to provide a strong foundation in biological sciences, genetics, and related quantitative and applied fields. Students may complete a maximum of 60 units at the 1000-level and must complete at least 30 units of 3000-level courses to ensure advanced disciplinary expertise. A minimum of 12 units must also be taken in Transdisciplinary Problem-Solving courses. The core program includes 42 units of compulsory courses covering key areas such as Foundations of Life, Diversity of Life, Genetics, Gene Replication and Expression, Genomics and its Applications, Genetics of Human Disease, and Chemistry 1. Students also complete 6 units of quantitative biology training and 6 units of courses focused on bioethics or professional scientific practice. In addition, students complete at least 30 units of advanced electives, including subjects such as evolution, bioinformatics, developmental biology, plant genetics, human disease genetics, data science for biologists, and conservation biology, with at least 12 units at the 3000-level. Students may also undertake up to 12 units of genetics-focused research or special topic courses. A further 12 units may come from related disciplines such as medical science or neuroscience, and at least 48 units are taken as ANU electives. Overall, the program integrates genetics, biology, and quantitative methods to prepare graduates for careers in research, biotechnology, healthcare, and further scientific study.
