The Electrical Engineering curriculum at UBC Okanagan provides a comprehensive foundation in the principles and applications of electricity, electronics, and electromagnetism, preparing students to address complex engineering challenges. In the first year, students build core skills in sustainable engineering design, engineering computation and instrumentation, dynamics, matter and energy, and electricity, magnetism, and waves, establishing a strong grounding in fundamental engineering concepts. The second year advances these foundations with courses in system dynamics, thermodynamics and heat transfer, instrumentation and data analysis, applications of engineering design, and materials science, emphasizing analytical thinking and hands-on problem solving. In the third year, students explore specialized topics such as electromechanical devices, engineering electromagnetics, engineering economic analysis, digital systems design, and microcomputer engineering, integrating theoretical knowledge with practical design and laboratory experience. The fourth year focuses on advanced and applied areas including microelectromechanical systems, power system analysis and design, engineering law and ethics, microelectronics, and probability and random processes for engineers, equipping students with the technical expertise, ethical understanding, and analytical tools necessary for professional practice. Across all four years, the program emphasizes teamwork, design projects, and experimental work, fostering innovation, critical thinking, and professional readiness, and ensuring graduates are well-prepared to contribute to diverse industries such as telecommunications, energy systems, biomedical devices, and electronics.
